Subhoranjan Dasgupta received his Ph.D in Literature from the
University of Heidelberg, Germany. In his doctoral thesis Dialectics
and Dream he evaluated the poetry of Bishnu De, renowned Bengali
poet, in the light of Marxian aesthetics. Dr. Dasgupta's area
of specialization is the social basis of culture and creativity.
His monograph on the creative commitment of Akhtaruzzaman Elias, novelist of Bangladesh, titled Elegy and Dream was published by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies where he was a Visiting Fellow in 1998-1999. Since then Dr. Dasgupta has been engaged in studying the human dimension of Bengal Partition with Professor Jasodhara Bagchi. Housed by the School of Women's Studies, Jadavpur University, this research project produced its first book The Trauma and the Triumph-Gender Narrative of Bengal Partition in 2003.
At IDSK, Dr. Dasgupta is engaged in three projects. First, the research on the Gender Narrative of Bengal Partition is continuing, and its second volume will be published in 2004. Second, he has begun his study of Professor Sisir Kumar Das's monumental work on Indian Literature. Professor Das's thesis which seeks to link the various regional literatures on the basis of thematic similarities, spatio-temporal cohesion and a common historical vision will be applied to evaluate important creative texts written in several Indian languages. Third, Dr. Dasgupta is coordinating with the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, Berlin, which intends to fund a three-year project on 'Women and Media in the context of Globalisation'. Once this project is finalized, IDSK will implement it in collaboration with School of Women's Studies, Jadavpur University and other centres of women's studies in the eastern region.
